摘要: The persistence of plastic, particularly polypropylene (PP) and its conversion into microplastics (MPs, PP-MPs) in soil and aquatic environments has emerged as a significant ecological threat. Therefore, this study aims to isolate a consortium capable of degrading PP-MPs. The results found that three microbial consortia (CPP-KKU1, CPP-KKU2, and CPP-KKU3) exhibited the capability to degrade PP-MPs, resulting in a percentage weight loss ranging from 11.6 ± 0.02% to 17.8 ± 0.05% after 30 days. FTIR analysis revealed changes in the infrared spectrum of PP-MPs after degradation with these microbial consortia, with the formation of new functional groups such as -OH and -C=C confirming the degradation of PP via an oxidation process. Among the three promising microbial consortia, CPP-KKU3 (17.8 ± 0.05%) demonstrated the highest efficiency in degrading PP-MPs. Furthermore, the potential of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production using the degrading consortium was investigated to offer a sustainable approach to plastic waste degradation. The results indicated that CPPKKU2 and CPP-KKU3 were capable of producing PHB. Aforementioned, CPP-KKU3 was a good consortium to consider for degrading PP-MPs along with PHB production. Our results provide an integrated bioremediation technology with the production of bioplastics (PHB), addressing the issues of plastic waste and disposal simultaneously.
