摘要: Forest bathing, and other time spent in forests, is associated with health benefits including reduced stress, anxiety and blood pressure. We are conducting a randomized crossover trial to investigate whether inhalation of terpenes and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in forest air plays a role. Forty adult volunteers complete two 60-min seated forest bathing sessions in old growth forest near Mt. Rainier (WA, USA) wearing powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs). PAPRs contain VOC+particle filters in one session and sham (particle only) filters in the other, with sequence randomized for each participant and an 8-day minimum washout period between sessions. The trial is powered to detect the effect of forest VOC inhalation on the anticipated increase in heart rate variability, an indicator of parasympathetic nervous system activation. Field work concludes September 2023. We are also measuring a- and B-pinene and other forest terpenes in air and serum to characterize absorbed dose. Air samples are collected for 4+ hr during the session using thermal desorption tubes and low-flow pumps. Tubes are analyzed for 22 terpenes using GC/MS at Eurofins (Edmonton, Canada). Serum is collected immediately before and after the session and analyzed for a- and β-pinene, p-myrcene, D-3-carene, limonene, p-carophyllene, and a-humulene at CDC (Atlanta, USA). Preliminary results show a- and β-pinene and other terpenes at detectable levels in both air and serum. In this presentation, we share forest air and serum terpene concentrations and absorbed dose estimates from this first NIH-funded clinical trial of forest bathing and health.
