摘要: Biochemicals are getting attention by the research community as a part of the circular bioeconomy. Spruce needles in biochemical extraction can help to add value to the forest resource as well as achieve a green economy. However, the effective separation of spruce needles from branch wood is challenging. In this study, a novel multi-blade shaft mill (MBSM) was used in combination with mechanical sieving to isolate spruce needles from the branch and enrich their concentration for biochemical extraction. Milling operation parameters in combination with screening factors were optimised in order to obtain the largest proportion of needles as possible. The highest needle fraction (19.4 %) was obtained using a unique MBSM/sieving setting with the colour of the samples reflecting quantitative information on the blends (Figure 1). Considering that spruce needles represent some 37% of the branch biomass of the tree (Lestander, 2022), the results show that the separation method is effective. Hot water and acetone extractions showed that spruce needles had higher amounts of condensed tannins, antimicrobial compounds, wax, and phenolic compounds than the other parts of the branches. These bioactive compounds have the prospectus of use in the leather, Pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics industries. Therefore, successful separation of the needles is of importance for the efficiency in biochemical production.
