Primary factors influencing wind erosion of farmland in Wuchuan County, Inner Mongolia, China

摘要: Wind climate erosivity and biological factors,which are the main natural causes of wind erosion, vary with seasons, but in most parts of inner Mongolia, northwest China, there is a temporal and spatial interaction between the two that causes serious wind erosion in Spring. Some primary factors that influence wind erosion of rain-fed farmland in semiarid areas were qualitatively and quantitatively studied through meteorological data analysis, field investigations and wind tunnel simulation. Increasing erosion with increasing wind, which is much more serious at surface soil moisture content below 6%, has become much more serious at 4% and very serious at 2%. Because the soil moisture content of near the surface of farmlands is less than 2%, wind erosion occurs easily in Wuchuan County. The field experiments and wind tunnel results confirmed that crop residues could reduce wind erosion considerably, whereas tillage greatly aggravates it. Wind erosion is a serious hazard to cropland in the absence of adequate surface cover. So the current cropping systems must be changed because of their bare surface conditions at the wrong time. Maintaining crop stalks or other obstacles in the field in winter plays an essential role in suppressing wind erosion. The longer crop stalks remain in the field and the higher their density and length, the lower the wind erosion will be. Increasing cover on different field scales is the overall solution to these problems.
